The agent finds cameras over ONVIF and RTSP. They appear in the app, and video goes straight from your site to your phone.
Port forwarding puts a camera's login page on the public internet, and cheap cameras are not built to live there. Vendor apps avoid that, but your video goes through their servers and stops working when they lose interest in the product.
I wanted a third option for my own cameras: a tunnel I control, between devices I own. CamVPN is that project. It is in development and runs on my own cameras today.
